This Sichuan Qinghai Overland Tour will take you to explore the Sichuan and Qinghai Tibetan Area. Highlights of this tour are Flower Lake, Langmusi temples, Xiahe Labrang monastery and Ruoergai Grassland.

Day1 :Chengdu-Wenchuan-Songpan-Chuanzhu Temple-Ruoergai(510km)

Today you can not only enjoy the charming view along the way of The famous route to Songpan,which is Chengdu-Dujiangyan-Wenchuan-Songpan. The whole route is about 510km which takes you 8-9 hours depending on the weather and car condition. After 5.12 Wenchuan earthquake, this route has been re-built so the road condition is great.

Day2 :Ruoergai-Ga Lake-Hezuo(200km)

Ruoergai Grassland is located in both Ruoergai and Hongyuan. It is the biggest grassland in SichuanProvince. It is consisted of grassland and marshes and it is one of the three main wetlands in China. It is one of the flat landscapes in Sichuan. Ruoergai Grassland is also the place where the red army walked during the Long March. Ruoergai Grassland is also called the oasis of northwestern Sichuan“. Ruoergai Grassland is home to nomads Tibetans. Prayer flags, monasteries and nomads villages are the unique symbols here.

After that you head to Zhagana, a Mountain located in Yiwa Township, 34 kilometers northwest of Diebu County. The terrain is like a giant palace with a large scale and a complete ancient city built by natural rock walls, 2200 above sea level. In the afternoon you will go to Hezuo,where you will stay tonight.

Day3 :Hezuo- Ta’er Monastery - Xining(370km)

After leaving Hezuo and go to Ta'er Monastery , which is around 25km to the southwest of Xining city. Standing in an imposing manner according to the gradient of the mountain, the Taer Lamasery is a wonderful architectural complex that embraces 9,300 structures, including scripture halls, Buddha halls, lamas residences, and Buddhist pagodas. Built in 1622, in the center of the entire complex, the Great Hall of Gold Tiles is the core structure of the lamasery. The ridges of the halls roof are decorated with auspicious objects such as treasure bottles, gold streamers, and gold deer. In the center of the hall is a silver pagoda built around a pipal tree; and a statue of Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), the founder of the Yellow Sect (Gelug Sect) of Tibetan Buddhism, is placed in the pagoda. In the hall there also exists a collection of hundreds of works by Tsongkhapa and his disciples as well as hand-written copies of scriptures in Tibetan and Mongolian.

After that you transfer to the capital of Qinghai province-Xining. Qinghai is the province with the largest number of national minorities, such as Tibetan, Tu, Sala, and Hui etc. So Qinghai is such kind of place with special culture.

Day4 : Xining-Bird Island-Qinghai Lake(240km)

Qinghai Lake is about 3,205 meters or 10,515 feet above sea level.You will have a view of the Bird Island, which is near to the lake and also a famous scenic spot in this place.After than,Drive to Qinghai Lake, also known as Lake Kokonor. Visit the largest salt-water lake in China and a sacred historical place for Tibetans. See the surrounding shores that are dotted with Tibetan nomadic family tents. Explore the highlands of the Tibetan Plateau. Take great photos from a nearby vista point. Ride on a horse or yak (own expense) for an authentic Tibetan nomad experience. Hike the Shala-Pass (own expense), if interested. Trek up to 2.3m (3700m), which usually takes 1 to 2-hours. Enjoy panoramic views of the lake.Have lunch in a picnic area by the lake. Spend time with local Tibetan nomads and learning first-hand about life in their community. Head back to your hotel in the early evening following the tour.

Day5 :Qinghai Lake-Chaka-Xining(360km)

Today try to get up early in order to enjoy the marvelous sunrise of Chaka Salt Lake. The Lake is covered by salt plainly visible like crystals in the lake bed on which people can walk. It provides many tons of edible salt each year and is one of important industries in Qinghai province. Salt mining began as early as some 3000 years ago.Then drive back to Xining.

Day6 :Xining-Xiahe-Hezuo-Ruoergai(640km)

You will try to get up early and arrive in Xiahe at lunch time.Then visit is the famous Labrang Monastery. Founded in 1709 by the Yellow Hat Sect (Gelukpa) of Tibetan Buddhism, Labrang Monastery is one of the six very important Yellow Hat Sect monasteries in China. In terms of size it is second largest one, only next to the Potala Palace in Lhasa. In Tibetan, Labrang means the place where the Buddhist Palace stands. The present head monk, 3rd in religious importance behind the Dalai and Panchen Lamas, is the sixth incarnation of the Jiemuyang. Within the monastery there has been built 6 Sutra Halls, 84 Buddha halls of different size and period.

Day7 :Rouergai-Langmusi-Songpan-Chengdu(510km)

Driving northwest to Chuanzhu Monastery via the grassland and Flower Lake, in summer time, you can see the flourishing flowers and greenery in the vast grassland. Chuanzhu Monastery is located at the border of Sichuan and Gansu province, an area originally inhabited by Tibetans. Chuanzhu is not just a monastery, but the small town itself is called Chuanzhu, famous with its splendid complex of temples, holy sky burial site and paradise-like Namo valley. The flower lake nearby is a beautiful wetland at the heart of an immense grassland, which is also worth a visit.Now it’s time to say goodbye,see you next!
